How to Choose a Primary School in Singapore

Short answer

Choose a primary school on factors you can verify: home-school distance (which drives P1 priority), the programmes it runs, its CCAs, any affiliation to a secondary school, and practical fit like session timing and support. MOE does not rank primary schools, so ignore 'best school' lists and compare official fields from the MOE school directory instead.

There is no official “best” primary school in Singapore — MOE does not rank primary schools, and the curriculum is national. So the useful question is not “which school is top?” but “which school is a good fit, and where does my family have a realistic chance?” Both can be answered from official data rather than forum opinion.

Start with distance — it counts twice

Home-school distance drives your P1 registration priority from Phase 2B onwards, and it also decides your child’s daily commute for six years. A school within 1km gives the strongest priority band and the shortest travel. Before you fall in love with a school across the island, check the real distance from your registered address on OneMap.

Compare the things MOE actually publishes

Every mainstream school’s profile in the MOE school directory lists concrete, comparable fields. Weigh these instead of reputation:

Official fields worth comparing: Programmes ALP and LLP themes; CCAs Sports, arts, uniformed groups; Affiliation Link to a secondary school; MOE Kindergarten A Phase 2A route in; Practical fit Session, student care, support

Factor What to look for
Programmes Applied Learning Programme (ALP) and Learning for Life Programme (LLP) themes — a school’s distinctive focus, such as STEM, the arts or outdoor education.
CCAs The sports, uniformed groups, visual/performing arts and clubs offered — a signal of where the school invests.
Affiliation Whether the school is affiliated to a secondary school, which can give priority at later admission stages.
MOE Kindergarten Whether an MOE Kindergarten is located within the school, giving a Phase 2A route.
Practical fit Single or double session, student care services, and learning support such as Allied Educators (AED).

Decide what matters for your child

A school is a six-year environment, not a trophy. Think about your child’s temperament and your family’s logistics:

  • Travel and timing. Can a six-year-old manage the commute? Does the session timing fit your family’s day?
  • Interests. If your child loves music, sport or the outdoors, a school whose LLP matches is a better fit than a “famous” school that does not.
  • Support. If your child may need learning support, check what the school offers.
  • Community. Siblings’ schools and your realistic distance band often matter more than prestige.

Build a sensible shortlist

Rather than pinning hopes on one oversubscribed school far away, list a few schools where your distance band is strong and whose programmes fit. This is both a better experience for your child and a more realistic registration strategy, since most balloting is decided by distance within a phase.

What to ignore

  • Rankings and “top 10” lists. MOE publishes none for primary schools.
  • Old balloting numbers as a promise. They describe last year’s demand, not this year’s outcome.
  • Guaranteed-results tuition claims. Choosing a school is about fit, not a shortcut to grades.

Once you have a shortlist, map it against the registration calendar in P1 registration phases.
